Fitness Week: Spin Chic with Cortney

Today MCbJ is excited to feature YAS spin instructor and mommy of three, Cortney Taketa.

Cortney and I met in spin class and this fit little dynamo helps keep motivated! I didn’t start taking spin classes regularly until my third pregnancy, which may seem odd, but it turned out to be such a blessing. The high energy (I love loud music!) and low impact cardio workout kept me feeling strong and happier… Did I mention I am not one of those people that “loooves” being pregnant? So anything to boost my mood and keep me pregnancy toned is a MCbJ must have. I have continued to take spin classes post baby and it has helped whip me back into shape! It is one of the most effective, calorie burning, low impact and fun workouts out there. Plus you have high energy, “morning people” like Cortney to make you smile. Enjoy her fitness words of wisdom! xx
P.S. Stay tuned for an awesome YAS giveaway on Saturday! 😉

courtney I have many roles in my life – wife, employee, friend and most importantly, mommy to three kiddos.  I believe it to be the best gift in the world, but at the same time it is utterly exhausting (I’m sure you’re all feeling me on this one).  I’m still searching for that perfect balance between finding myself and caring for mi familia.  So if any of you out there has found the secret to juggling the responsibilities of being a super mommy, please let me know your trick!

A little about myself: I have a beautiful 7-year old daughter and a set of adorable 5-year old boy/girl twins. I married my high school sweetheart who just so happens to be the most amazing father in the world. Life is good, yet I still found myself searching for who I was
.

That’s when I developed a “Fitness Me Time” routine. For me, it’s called exercise; and it changed my life and body for the better! At the age of 36 I set out to become an instructor at my favorite hangout, YAS, a local spin and yoga studio. Now I wake up everyday full of life. By being active I am teaching my children the importance of physical fitness, hard work and dedication. It’s important for us mommies to have FMT (Fitness Me Time). Many of you might tell me that this hard to do when you’re constantly dealing with diapers, throw-up, temper tantrums, lack of sleep and countless other not so glamorous mom issues.  Yet, you have to remember to not only take care of your loved ones, but also to take care of yourself. Make yourself a priority too. It takes you committing to you.

Here are some of my tips to get started:

1. Make a schedule. Your kids have a soccer schedule; your husband has a work schedule. Include your workout plans into the weekly family schedule.

2. Dress the Part. Put on your workout clothes. If you like to exercise in the morning (like me), get up and put your workout clothes on right away. When my kids were babies and my time was limited, I would sometimes go to bed in my workout clothes (you gotta do what you gotta do, right? 😉 ).  You don’t have to go that extreme, but still to this day, I lay out my Lulu’s before bed.  Dressing the part will put you in the right mindset.

3. No Excuses. Don’t let your kids be your excuse.  Beg, borrow or steal a sitter to watch the little ones if you have to.  Okay, if that is simply not possible, strap them into a stroller, arm them with entertainment (ipad, snacks, books, etc.), turn your music up and you’re good to go. They WILL be fine, I promise you.

4. Geek Out. Take advantage of technology and use Apps to schedule your classes in advance. Most gyms have Apps that allow you register for classes the week or day before. If I know I have already committed to a class, I WILL go.

5. Partner up. Make friends with people in your favorite class or get a buddy to walk with you. It’s amazing how knowing a friend is waiting for you will make you get your booty to a workout.

6. Tune Out. Allow yourself some time to tune out the world and tune into yourself. Life becomes much less tense after a GREAT sweat session!

I have a lot more tips, tricks and motivation to get you moving. Just put on your cutest gear (I mean, how cute are the workout outfits on MCbJ this week?) and get after it! You will LOVE the person in the mirror. It’s not about weight, it’s about feeling great!

with love,

Cortney

Because it is always chic to give.  As moms we are always giving and most of the time it is not even appreciated until our children are much older (let's hope!) So it may seem challenging to give to anyone else, but we should all try no matter how little the amount or the time. Thinking outside of ourselves is good for our hearts and those of our children.
