Unless otherwise indicated by a doctor, you should continue exercising with your “Baby on Board.” Not only will it help keep your weight gain down, it is good for you and your baby. For me it was also essential for my mental health. As any mom will attest during pregnancy the hormones run wild often can leading to all sorts of erratic behavior. Working out is one way to help find peace and happiness… Well that and a day at the spa.
Enjoy these tips from fabulously fit mommy contributor Cortney Taketa. Take it from us, she knows a lot about looking and feeling good. Trés inspirational chic! xx
One of the millions of questions I had when I first became pregnant was: “Can I still workout while I am preggo?” Good news mommies, the answer is “YES!”
Not only can you workout but it’s encouraged. Obviously consult with your doctor before you start any exercise routine. Some women will not be able to exercise during pregnancy because of specific conditions or complications. Now is not the time to start a NEW exercise; you should continue with your current workout routine as your growing belly, swollen feet and ravenous appetite allow you.
There are a few basic rules to follow when working out for two: 1) If it feels wrong, it probably is. 2) Don’t go breathless, twist or do crunches. 3) As a general rule of thumb keep your target heart rate to 140 (a handy dandy heart rate monitor will help you track this one).
A few of the best exercises for mommies to be are:
- YOGA– Yoga helps with stamina, balance, aches and pains, nervousness, breathing and encourages nurturing.
- RUNNING– ***If you are ALREADY a runner ***Going for a run is a quick and effective way to work your heart and body, giving you a mental and physical boost when you feel tired.
- INDOOR CYCLING– Take a load off your legs! Spinning is a good way to boost your heart rate without stressing your joints. As your belly grows, you can raise the handle-bars for greater comfort.
- WALKING– You can do it anywhere, at your speed and it safely helps tone muscles and improve your mood.
- SWIM– Swimming is the best and safest exercise for pregnant women. Swimming is ideal because it exercises both large muscle groups (arms and legs), provides cardiovascular benefits, and allows expectant women to feel weightless despite the extra pounds of pregnancy.
- DANCE– Put your tunes on in your living room, grab a toddler and start to move!!
Okay so before you start moving, it’s time to invest in some new gear! Your go-to black spandex aren’t going to get you very far and are probably starting to squeeze. Luckily for all you chic mommies Old Navy and GAP have affordable, and cute styles that are available online to meet all your workout needs.
