Kathryn Miller, Interior Designer extraordinaire and MCbJ contributor, knows a thing or two about having fun… As do we all! And when it comes to Halloween parties the same is true. Here she shares with us spooky chic Halloween party decor that is guaranteed to make for a scary good time. xx
If you’re like me, there’s not much you like more than a good party. Well, okay, maybe a good nap…or a full night of rest… or a really great date… or a stiff cocktail… oh, or an awesome day with the kiddos…
So, since it’s becoming Fall, and Halloween parties are in our future, I want to share with you a really cool party that a few friends here in Newport Beach and I had the privilege of attending (it was for our book club meeting at our friend Dena’s house). Dena put together one of the rad-est and most thought-out Halloween themed parties that I’ve ever attended. Even though she DIY’d it all – it did not have the DIY vibe – but instead felt very upscale, classy, and chic.
**Sidenote: Since I took these pictures several years ago with a Blackberry (What’s a Blackberry?), the picture quality is so low – but you’ll get the idea.
To begin (mostly because it involves vodka – so, why not start here?), Dena used an empty 1/2 gallon milk carton; cut the top off of the carton; put a bottle of Grey Goose (or another good vodka/liquor) in the box; filled it with water; and then dropped in creepy decorations and twigs in the water. Afterwards she froze it completely and then cut the box and peeled it off the ice before the party. Notice how she displayed it in a metal stand so if it melted a little the water would have a place to stay.
She displayed the stemware and glasses perfectly, adding that level of sparkle. Vary the heights to pique interest and even add in a few themed goblets, skeleton hands, and spider webbing for the tablecloth.
Dena added to the display: pearl onions, olives, and candy eyeballs in elevated glass serving dishes for a spooky flair.
The way-cute printed labels are by Martha Stewart which you can buy here. She made caramel apples but in the place of a Popsicle stick she used a twiggy branch… then she placed the caramel apple on a leaf, twiggy branch side up. To avoid the caramel apple sticking to the leaf, spray EVOO on the leaf!
For decoration, Dena printed Halloween comic pages and hung them in between fabric ghost lights (be sure to print two copies of each cover so that you can glue them together back-to-back so both sides have a comic cover). She made her fabric ghost lights on her own but you can also buy them off the shelf here.
… and her burlap fabric selection made them extra special! I love how she hung her comics up with a twine.
