Let’s face it pregnant or not, a deep peaceful sleep is often an issue for us tired mommies. When pregnant, I often would find it hard to get comfortable and fall asleep. I swear some nights I could feel the hormones rushing through my body and when it wasn’t that I would get “restless leg syndrome.” However, with each pregnancy I have used more and more tactics to help me achieve a good night of sleep. This army of tools included a body pillow, a lavender scented eye mask, relaxing spa music, soothing tea and making sure to have enough iron in my diet. I learned in my first pregnancy this is often the cause of “restless leg syndrome.”
These items are all very helpful until the last few weeks of pregnancy and then forget it, I am happy to get a few consistent hours. The reality is by the time you are that big it is tough to get comfortable and you make experience a lot of Braxton Hicks contractions throughout the night. These little warm-up contractions can be more and more painful as the big day approaches and inevitably will keep you up. I noticed mine really liked to gear up between the hours of 1am and 4am. I mean, how cruel is that? The last few weeks should be a time to get as much sleep as possible since you will soon be up around the clock feeding your new little love. Sadly, this isn’t the case for most moms. It’s like our bodies are preparing for the sleepless nights ahead…
And then our babies are here! Happily we can once again sleep on our stomachs and eventually return to a full night of sleep. However, whether you had too much caffeine that day or your mind is racing with all the things you have to do, it can still be hard to fall into a peaceful sleep. Hence why I still use some relaxation remedies such as tea, a warm bath, an eye mask and I still love to sleep with my body pillow. After three pregnancies I have grown accustom to snuggling with my “other husband”. Sure, the hubby gets a little jealous, but let’s be honest here, he wants to cuddle for two minutes and then retreat to his side of the bed. While my pillow lets me hug it the whole night long. 🙂
