MCbJ: When did you start Olya Jewelry and what was your inspiration?
OH: I was always creating things with my hands for as long as I can remember. My dad taught me to sew, my mom taught me to knit and my grandma taught me to stitch and crochet, back in the Ukraine. So my hands always need to be busy! A love of fashion and accessories eventually lead me to want to start my own line.

MCbJ: Tell us about some of the items you carry and what makes them unique.
OH: I call my style ‘bohemian rock’ – it’s bohemian inspired jewelry, with rock ’n’ roll edge and a hit of glamour. Most of the pieces can be worn everyday and help elevate whatever look you’re wearing. I source all the materials from a select few suppliers and then hand-make everything in my home studio.

MCbJ: You have two young children. Has it been difficult juggling work and being an available mom?
OH: I think it’s always difficult to do it all. Moms do so much, and luckily multitasking is something that I seem to be okay at… some of the time! It’s not always easy though and I never seem to have enough time in the day for a lot of things I wish I could devote more attention to.

MCbJ: Since becoming a mom how have you changed?
OH: Becoming a mom has given me a huge confidence boost and also the biggest respect for all other moms. I also have an increased understanding of my own mother now, and see why, way back when, she was always right and I was always wrong!

MCbJ: What advice do you have for new moms with dreams of having their own business?
OH: It’s all about your attitude and prioritizing. Both your family and your business fight for attention, and you can often feel guilty about neglecting one or the other. I found the best trick is to make a set time where one becomes the priority. For example, I make sure that I’m focusing on making jewelry after dropping the kids to school, from 9-1, and not stressing about what I’m going to make for their dinner! Of course, that changes once I pick them up!

MCbJ: What do you love about your job?
OH: Everything! It makes me so happy. It challenges me, inspires me and motivates me on a daily basis. I love being able to work from home, and still feel like I’m connected to what is happening out in the world of fashion.

MCbJ: How would you describe your own personal style?
OH: My personal style is eclectic. I love French women’s style and feel sexiest in a simple white t-shirt, ripped jeans and red lipstick.

Because it is always chic to give.  As moms we are always giving and most of the time it is not even appreciated until our children are much older (let's hope!) So it may seem challenging to give to anyone else, but we should all try no matter how little the amount or the time. Thinking outside of ourselves is good for our hearts and those of our children.
