Last week my son and I went out for some exercise and bonding time. Our cruise turned into an even more meaningful experience as we saw that our usual path was lined with American flags. I explained to my son that they were there to honor the local military men and women who had lost their lives in war.
It was incredibly touching. As I read some of the bios on the flags to my son I couldn’t help but get choked up. Many of the soldiers were so young. We are talking 19 and 20 years old. I felt gratitude and sorrow at the same time.
As we were looking at the flags I saw an older gentleman wearing a Marine polo shirt walking with his great grandson (or at least I assume this was the relationship). He was proudly showing the flags to his great grandson who clearly had deep admiration for him. I couldn’t help but wish my grandfather was still here to do this with his namesake, my oldest son Jay.
My grandfather, Jay, truly was a hero and world renowned fighter pilot. A General in the Marines, he lead troops of men through three wars. He truly loved his country and all it stood for. He believed in freedom and he was proud to fight for it.
For many of us, myself included, we take this sacrifice for granted. I have found myself taking this less for granted as I have gotten older. I am more appreciative, responsible and reflective. Part of it has to do with age, and part of it has to do with having my own children in whom I wish to import such values.
This Memorial Day, more than ever before, I will be thinking about why we celebrate this day. I will be thinking about my grandfather, who is no longer with us, and all those soldiers that put their lives on the line to protect this great country. With a heart full of gratitude, my family and I will thank the soldiers of the past and present.
I am hopeful that regardless of how you feel about war, you will do the same. This country did not become the home of the free and the brave without the courage, commitment and sacrifice by the soldiers past and present.
Finally, now as a mother, I want to say thank you and offer my condolences to any mom that lost her baby. You too are a hero.
Happy Memorial Day! xx
with love,
Jessica
