Fitness Week: Healthy Chic with Kathryn Miller

Seeing as this is fitness week, it is the perfect time for yogi and MCbJ contributor Kathryn Miller to share some of her tips for finding a healthy balance on and off the yoga mat. Maybe one day she can design a yoga studio for me… I guess you can call this “one can dream” chic:) Enjoy xx
……….

Hi friends //

In honor of Mommy Chic by Jessica’s Fitness Week, I wanted to touch on the practice of keeping a fit & healthy mind and body so that you can keep your home a happy and positive place to be! Nice furniture and decor is the facade but it is the “inside” of the home that truly makes it home. Whether you work hard at an office, stay at home and work with your beautiful babies, or do a little bit of both, or if you’re still figuring out your place in this big ol’ world – your mind, body and spirit need to stay healthy.

I did yoga for years and then life got “too busy” so I stopped practicing all together as a way to save money and time. In fact, I stopped devoting any time to myself in every way possible in a misguided attempt to save time and money…and also so I could buy more pillows… duh.

If any of you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that I posted about a tough time I went through last year and during that period I neglected a special rose bush which was an anniversary gift given to me by my husband years ago. After weeks months of no water, food or attention, that bush was as good as gone. Then as my mind and body healed, so did the health of the rose bush as it was nursed back to life. After heavy soul searching I learned a lot about me and in the process I developed a better mantra for my life and created goals that I choose to keep. When that rose bush finally bloomed I felt totally anew! If you hit a low in life – give it time and love (aaaaaaand water and sunshine) and it can flourish.

Quotes get me through A LOT in my life (they’re my Bible versus you could say) // I like to print them, frame them, and add them on a side table or a collage wall // Here were my “go-to’s” back then that helped me keep my mind and goals on the right path:
quote Another thing that keeps me mentally balanced is by doing YOGA! I made the observation that yes, it cost money (and precious time) but that I’m full of energy and major productivity afterwards. I prefer vinyasa yoga for the core and strength. It’s amazing how strong your body can become on such a small mat, using no weights, and only your own resistance! YOGA also reminds me to root my day in positivity and to leave all the JUNK out.

keviatdrink I am in NO WAY a health guru…I eat waaaaaaay too much pizza and drink waaaaaaay too much wine (but it’s red, so it’s an antioxidant, right?  Move over POM, I’ve replaced you with red wine) and I overdose on cookie dough or any form of batter, if it’s within twenty feet of me. But, on the majority of days, I try to eat whole grain and drink a lot of smoothies and hydrate daily with water and KeVita (if anyone ever finds out in 10 years that KeVita is not good for you – as “they” always seem to do to with the things I love – e.g. don’t eat raw eggs in dough and batter –  then “they” can screw off.  I’ll go mad).

Doing those things help me power through the long hours of the day, whether at the desk all day or back at the playground with the kids for a third time…

For my YOGA of choice – I choose Jabulani Yoga in Corona del Mar, CA.  Amanda is my girl there! And the interior space there is a happy place, which makes me want to incorporate a header_logo serene space like that in my house…OR even better….design a yoga studio! I hope each of you find time in your busy, busy days in life to grow into the best form of a person that you are able to be (or hopefully choose to be), for yourself and for your home. Namaste//

with love,

Kathryn

Because it is always chic to give.  As moms we are always giving and most of the time it is not even appreciated until our children are much older (let's hope!) So it may seem challenging to give to anyone else, but we should all try no matter how little the amount or the time. Thinking outside of ourselves is good for our hearts and those of our children.
