FALL Back to Basics: Family Picture Time

This talented lady is not just a fabulous photographer, she is a friend and the younger sister of a best friend. I have enjoyed watching her career and her photography skills grow. She is passionate about capturing the special moments, and she is is good at it!

Today Emily shares her tips for achieving a memorable family photo. And since this is the time where there will be many of them, from a Christmas card photo to the whole crew with Grandma, this is what we need to know right now and all year round. Thanks Em, for sharing! xx

Getting everyone together for holiday family photos can be a stressful and agonizing process. With a little preparation of yourself and family before the big photo session you can actually have fun with real smiles. The photo shoot will flow smoothly and you can relax.

photoshoot2 Mentally preparing the kiddos…
If your little ones are old enough to understand the concept of pictures, I recommend hyping up the big photo session a few days prior. By showing your excitement for the session, the kids will feel your enthusiasm and show interest in the photo session themselves.

Outfits
Adults:
Keep it simple. Wear solid colors, layered looks, a week old haircut, manicured/trimmed nails, clothes that flatter your form.
Avoid loud patterns, wrinkled clothes, and over distracting jewelry. I highly recommend wearing mainly solid colors because it can be distracting if everyone is wearing patterns. That being said one pattern that ties everyone together looks great as long as it is done right.
photoshoot6 Babies/Kids:
Outfits can be a little more bold with color and style, but still avoid loud patterns that can take away from their cute faces. Choose comfy clothes that they won’t fuss in. If they are uncomfortable, it will show in their expressions. I love the occasional bow or hat to show off a sassy style. It adds character to the image.
There is NO requirement for elaborate decorations/props..
Unless you have a specific set up in mind, don’t over stress about having props. It’s the job of the photographer to work with you and help you create the setup you have in mind. Sometimes having too many props can be distracting for the little ones and it can cause disruption during the shoot itself. The photographer will help you throughout the entire photo process, from choosing the right wardrobe, to scouting locations and providing you with your ideal photo session.

photoshoot4 Break Time
Your kiddos are not professional models. They are little bundles of energy that will most likely need breaks in between family photo time. The photographer should expect this and encourage a break if necessary. Bring a snack or favorite toy that will allow them that chance to pause for a few minutes before continuing the session. Some of my favorite photos are ones I took during this break when the little one gave me their biggest smile that wasn’t forced.
Lastly, don’t overthink it! It’s the photographer’s job to pose you and provide you with a great photo session experience. Have fun and enjoy every minute of it. You are bound to get timeless images with a positive outlook.

with love,
emily

Philanthropy

Because it is always chic to give.  As moms we are always giving and most of the time it is not even appreciated until our children are much older (let's hope!) So it may seem challenging to give to anyone else, but we should all try no matter how little the amount or the time. Thinking outside of ourselves is good for our hearts and those of our children.
