Baby on Board Chic Week: Foodie Friday

When you have a “Baby on Board” it can be very confusing when it comes to what to eat or not eat. I know when I was pregnant the first time the list of things to avoid eating and doing were enough to make me feel like I should lock myself in a closet… Then I became pregnant a second time and third time, I realized that life can still go on while pregnant.

Rather than focusing on what I should not do or eat, my focus instead became to be the healthiest version of myself… something I wish I could be all the time. Unfortunately, without a baby inside me there isn’t the same incentive to stop at an occasional glass of wine or just a slice of pizza (I blame this on the wine 🙂 ).

So in fact, I am smarter about what I put in my mouth when preggers. Not to say that when I am pregnant I don’t attack a burrito or a piece of pie with added enthusiasm, because I do… just not everyday for the whole nine months. My advice to pregnant mommies when it comes to food is to just be smart about it. Life is about balance and moderation. Pregnancy is no different.

It is however important to note that there are a few foods I completely avoided because as my OB said “it just isn’t worth the risk”. She was referring to eating sushi or any meat/cheese that may carry bacteria. Odds are you and your baby would be fine if you ate one of these foods, but food poisoning or being on antibiotics while pregnant (or anytime for that matter) is bad. I would know since I have unfortunately had to deal with both. The food poisoning came from a deli meat sandwich and that was enough to make me avoid it through all my pregnancies. Even now I am wary, as most people are with any food that caused them to log some serious toilet bonding time.

And moving on from that ugliness. Let’s talk cupcakes and ice cream…Yes, you are burning extra calories, but you are not actually eating for two grown people. It has been determined you burn roughly 300 more caloriesa day give or take a bit. So choose wisely when deciding how to spend those extra calories burned. Follow your craving and have that ice cream, but stick to a bowl not a carton. And chances are you won’t want to eat the whole carton if you fill up on some nutrient dense food first. Again the whole balance and moderation thing.

So to help you reach this goal of being at food peace while pregnant we have compiled a simple list of things to eat and things to avoid during this important time. And remember “a moment on your lips forever on your {babies} hips”… TOTALLY kidding!! But in all seriousness make sure to give your baby the food nutrients they need to get off to the best start possible. That being said, go ahead and have that slice of pizza. I know I will since it is pizza and movie night for my family. xx

Because it is always chic to give.  As moms we are always giving and most of the time it is not even appreciated until our children are much older (let's hope!) So it may seem challenging to give to anyone else, but we should all try no matter how little the amount or the time. Thinking outside of ourselves is good for our hearts and those of our children.
