Summer Essential Chic: Bardot owner Dana Harmon talks Summer Essentials with MCbJ

I fell in love with Dana and her boutique about 2 years ago when a friend recommended I check out Bardot for an upcoming shoot I was styling. So glad I did! Not only did I find some perfect items for that shoot, I now frequently visit Bardot for other shoots, items for clients and of course, for myself. What I love most about Bardot is the unique clothing items they carry, in addition to the tried and true favorites. Every busy mommy needs their local go-to boutique. This is the place for many of us Newport Beach mommies. Thank you Dana for making it easy and fun to grab a stylish look and run. Shop Bardot now through the weekend and receive 10% off your purchase when you mention MCbJ. Tres chic!  xx

1. Tell us about Bardot.

I opened Bardot in 2012 in hopes of filling a void I saw in Orange County of smaller fashion-forward brands at accessible price points. There are so many fashionable women living here who want to wear something a little different than what they can find at the larger retailers in the area. We found our niche with the moms of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach who come to us for both their everyday basics (we like to call it, “carpool cool”) as well as special event attire for charity galas, showers, birthdays, etc.

2. Being a boutique owner in Newport Beach, a city with families, how much of your customers are moms?

The majority of my customers are moms- we cater to both young mothers with toddlers whose busy lives require wash and wear cotton pieces to moms with kids in their teens and twenties who love to come in to shop for themselves and pick up a little something extra for their daughters.

3. In your opinion, what are the things that moms should have in their closet to look fabulous and not frumpy?

For everyday: A flattering pair of skinny jeans in a classic wash, cotton blouses from Frank & Eileen or Xirena, basic tanks & tees that will last from Vince, and a fun, printed scarf to punch up a basic outfit.

4. What are your summer essentials?

Muscle Tees from Current/Elliott, printed soft pants from A.L.C., my Kore Swim bikini, a Ruby Mint beach towel, Kai perfume oil, and Joie sandals.

5. What is the must-buy trend for summer?

White everywhere. Create a monochromatic white look by pairing white denim flares with a crisp white blouse or try a white minidress from A.L.C. or Nightcap Clothing. And the good news is, the trend is going to stick around so you’ll be able to repurpose some of the pieces you purchase now for winter white looks later!

6. What are the best-selling items that moms are buying these days?

We can’t keep enough of Current/Elliott’s super-soft cotton tees in stock. They’re the perfect go-to for moms because the fit is great and they’re comfy as well…plus a little spill will wash out easily! Little sundresses from Pam & Gela, BB Dakota, and Amanda Uprichard fly out the door as well due to their versatility. Pair an easy little printed dress with metallic flats for everyday or some delicate jewelry and a great wedge sandal for brunch with the girls.  Mom’s also love local line Maison du Soir– a pajama line that can also be worn during the day. We sell a ton of the line’s cotton knit tunics that are great for lounging around the house or as a cover-up for the beach. muscletee maisondusoir

7. What are your three favorite things in your store right now?

Lacausa lightweight shirtdresses, colorful Xirena lingerie/swimwear, and the entire collection of denim from James Jeans – I can’t pick one style! xirena

8. How can a mom who usually dresses within her comfort zone step out of the box and dress more chic?

Start small. Be a little more adventurous with your accessories. Invest in a unique statement necklace like ours from Mignonne Gavigan. You can pair this back to outfits you already have like a t-shirt and jeans or a little black dress for a fun change. And once you’re really ready to step outside your comfort zone with your wardrobe, in general, come visit us at Bardot where we can help style some new looks that you’ll feel great in! necklace

  1. Hi there! This article couldn’t be written much better! Looking at this post reminds me of my previous roommate! He constantly kept preaching about this. I most certainly will forward this post to him. Fairly certain he’ll have a great read. Many thanks for sharing!

Because it is always chic to give.  As moms we are always giving and most of the time it is not even appreciated until our children are much older (let's hope!) So it may seem challenging to give to anyone else, but we should all try no matter how little the amount or the time. Thinking outside of ourselves is good for our hearts and those of our children.
