Baby in Bassinet Chic Week: What to Wear with Xpecting Boutique Owner Stephani Clymer

I first met this wonderful mommy when we worked together on a charity fashion show, but I knew of her darling store long before that. I would definitely consider her an expert when it comes to mommy fashion during pregnancy and after. Lucky for MCbJ readers Stephani is sharing with us how to dress once your baby has arrived. As I mentioned earlier this week, this can be a confusing time but with these tips of wisdom will surely help you achieve mommy chicness. xx

1. Tell us a little about Xpecting?

We consider ourselves a lifestyle boutique for moms. We realize our clients are busy enjoying time with their kids, going to work, planning dinners, running errands and hoping for a date night . The last thing they have time for is finding outfits for all of these occasions. So, we take care of it for them by offering a mix of fabulous clothes that are fashionable, comfortable and affordable!

2. What inspired you to open the store? Were you already a mom?

I was inspired by one of my best friends who was a stylish pregnant gal, constantly complaining that she could not find anything great to wear. Believe it or not I was 25 and newly dating my now husband – we laugh all of the time that he wasn’t scared away by this nutty idea.

3. What are some of the favorite brands you carry in store?  What is the typical price range?

Our range is awesome – we have splurges such as denim (J Brand is a favorite) and classic pieces (think Ella Moss), but we carry tons of under $30 tees, under $50 tops and under $70 dresses. Our pieces are wearable and washable because that is what moms need and love. One thing I am really proud of is our mix of brands – so many clients tell me they find a new label to love every time they pop in.

4. Since many moms are confused by what to wear after having a baby, what would you say are new mom closet essentials?

Forgiving tops and dresses (loose in the belly), jeggings so you can get the denim look in comfort, a great comfy bottom that is not sweats (right now we are really into printed pants and shorts) and of course, nursing friendly options.

5. When it comes to nursing, what bras and clothing tips do you have?

Every mom needs at least 3 bras (wearing one, washing one and don’t forget at least one in your drawer). The first lesson in mommyhood is to always be prepared. Nursing tanks with a built-in bra are essential and Ripe is the BEST brand. Finally, get creative (or let us get creative for you). We stock tons of everyday clothes that have nursing access. Think rompers, maxis and more. There are not many stylish nursing clothes around so we’ve tested everyday fashions that work.

6. Any pajama must haves?

BelaBumBum is the very best. Their pants are perfect for a C-section and all pieces are mix and match so you get the perfect fit on top and bottom. Plus they are cute for those hospital photo opps.

7. What other best sellers do you carry in the store?

Daniel Rainn is a MUST have as well as Splendid, Enti, TKees and DL1961 Denim.

8. Is it difficult to juggle work and mommyhood?

Some days I think I have it all under control and others wine is my best friend. 🙂 I have flexibility and a job that I love so I count my blessing everyday.

9. Any advice for new mothers that are doing the same?

Surround yourself with great helpers. The girls at my store keep us going, Helen is our nanny (I hate that term for some reason) and she is like family, my husband is super hands on – bottom line, it really
does take a village. Also, girlfriends (only the kind who will NEVER judge) will be your lifeline and date nights are a must…find the things that keep you from losing every bit of your pre-baby self.

10.You have two adorable boys. What is your favorite thing to do with them?

Family bike rides are top of my list these days. That and spending our summer nights outside…ice cream store, running through sprinklers or playing ball pretty much sums up our family time.

Because it is always chic to give.  As moms we are always giving and most of the time it is not even appreciated until our children are much older (let's hope!) So it may seem challenging to give to anyone else, but we should all try no matter how little the amount or the time. Thinking outside of ourselves is good for our hearts and those of our children.
